- The opener strains, then gives up, or the door only lifts a few inches.
- A visible gap in the coil above the door.

Springs do the actual lifting on a garage door. The opener just tells them when. Every open and close counts as one cycle, and standard springs are built for about 10,000 of them, so after seven to ten years a break isn't bad luck. It's arithmetic.
When one spring breaks, its partner has the same mileage. Replacing only the broken one means the old spring drags the new one out of balance and puts you right back where you started in a year or two. How long do garage door springs last?
A standard spring is rated for about 10,000 open-and-close cycles. For most families that works out to 7 to 10 years. Park outside and it lasts longer; kids running the door all day, shorter. Ours are backed for 5 years or 10,000 cycles.
Should I replace both springs or just the broken one?
Both. They were installed the same day and carry the same mileage, so the survivor is usually weeks from its own bang. Doing both in one visit costs far less than two service calls.
